The Manager's Imperative
Managers and executives must perform a balancing act—managing their internal stress while working to alleviate the anxieties of their employees. The good news is that resistance to change can be recognized fairly easily in personal performance and the actions of others. What’s more is that executives can train themselves to be more accepting of change, in turn positioning the company for greater future success. While there is no formula for adapting to change, there are key actions executives can take to steady the ship and ready an organization for a new chapter, including:
> Reframe—Disruptive changes may initially appear as threats, but they often camouflage significant moments of opportunity. Shift perspective from coping to seeking what can be gained from trying times in order to instill a sense of purpose and positivity in an organization.
> Align—Change often brings with it an opportunity to reassess roles and reorganize for greater success. Team alignment also opens up opportunities for brainstorming—allowing employees to source solutions to current or future threats to the business.
> Decide—Strong, informed decisions reassure employees during difficult times. Leaders who recognize the need for change and are capable of making hard choices will create a culture of adaptability.
> Innovate—Innovation is a heavy word, but at the end of the day it is nothing more then deliberate. Leaders who choose to innovate will reap the rewards of a more fulfilled, loyal staff and a company that is positioned to accept any changes on the horizon.
> Reflect—Right or wrong, good or bad, there is always something to be learned from the process of change. Understanding the factors that precipitated a transformation will better equip the organization to handle future shifts or pivots.
